qurancordoba - Ramadan is a month full of blessings, where Muslims throughout the world carry out fasting as a form of obedience to Allah SWT. However, fasting is not just about enduring hunger and thirst, but also a means of increasing piety and closeness to Allah. To achieve maximum blessings, there is no better example than imitating the Prophet's style of fasting throughout Ramadan.
How did Rasulullah SAW observe fasting? This article will review the Prophet's habits that we can apply to make our Ramadan more meaningful and in accordance with Islamic teachings.
One of the habits of Rasulullah SAW in fasting was to hasten breaking the fast after sunset. In a hadith, he said:
Meaning : "People will remain in goodness as long as they hasten to break their fast." (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)
Rasulullah SAW broke his fast with dates and water . If there are no dates, he chooses to drink water before eating other dishes. This shows its simplicity and health benefits, where dates contain natural sugar which quickly restores energy after a day of fasting. So, you don't always have to break your fast with something sweet, as many people say.
Sahur is an important part of fasting. Rasulullah SAW strongly advised his people not to miss sahur, as in his words:
Meaning: "The Messenger of Allah said: Eat sahur, because in sahur there is blessing." (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)
He usually eats dates, water, milk, or other simple foods during suhoor (pre-dawn meal). Eating nutritious foods rich in fiber and protein can help maintain energy throughout the day, allowing us to fast more effectively.
Fasting is not only about abstaining from hunger and thirst, but also about guarding the tongue and heart from evil. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that while fasting, one should control one's anger, avoid vain talk, and refrain from quarreling.
"If someone is fasting, then do not speak dirty words and do not quarrel. If someone insults him, let him say: 'I am fasting.'"
(Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)
Emulating the way the Prophet Muhammad fasted means guarding one's tongue, avoiding gossip, and increasing prayer and dhikr .
Ramadan is a month full of rewards, and Rasulullah SAW used this time to increase his worship. Some of the practices he does during Ramadan include:
The Messenger of Allah was once asked, " What is the most noble charity?" He answered: "That is alms in the month of Ramadan " (HR Tirmidhi).
It is reported that Rasulullah SAW was the most generous person, and in the month of Ramadan, he became more enthusiastic about increasing alms, helping other people, and showing affection to everyone.
Despite fasting, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) continued his activities with enthusiasm. He never used fasting as an excuse to be lazy. In fact, some of Islam's greatest battles, such as the Battle of Badr, took place during Ramadan.
We can emulate him by continuing to carry out our daily duties, working with the intention of worship, and maintaining our enthusiasm for doing good. Faith and sincerity in Ramadan are the keys to staying productive throughout the day.
Meaning: " Whoever worships (lives) the month of Ramadan with faith and hopes for reward, Allah will forgive his past sins ." (HR Bukhari and Muslim)
Towards the end of Ramadan, Rasulullah SAW increasingly increased his worship by performing Iktikaf at the mosque . Iktikaf is staying silent in the mosque to get closer to Allah SWT, especially for muhasabah and achieving the blessing of the night of Laylatul Qadar , a night that is better than a thousand months.
"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) performed i'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan until Allah caused him to die." (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)
The Prophet said in another hadith:
Meaning: " Look for Lailatul Qadar in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan " (HR. At-Tirmidhi)
We can follow this sunnah by spending more time in worship during the last nights of Ramadan, both in the mosque and at home.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) always took care of his health, including during fasting. Some of the healthy habits he adopted include:
By maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle like the Prophet Muhammad, we can fast better and remain productive throughout the day.
Imitating the Prophet's way of fasting throughout Ramadan is not only about holding back hunger and thirst, but also guarding the heart, mouth, eyes and increasing worship. From hastening to break the fast, eating sahur, increasing worship, remaining productive, doing good deeds, friendship to maintaining health , all of these are sunnahs that we can apply to get the blessings and virtues of Ramadan.
