Quran — The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has predicted that a total lunar eclipse (GBT) will occur on September 7–8, 2025, and will be observable from all over Indonesia. This phenomenon will last from Sunday to Monday, 15–16 Rabiulawal 1447 AH .
According to the BMKG, the eclipse phase begins at 10:28 PM WIB and ends gradually at 1:52 AM WIB , with the peak eclipse occurring at 1:11 AM WIB . At its peak, the moon will appear red because its position is directly in the Earth's umbra.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth, and moon are aligned in a straight line . As a result, the sunlight that would normally illuminate the moon is completely blocked by the Earth.
In Islam, a lunar eclipse is known as khusuf al-qamar . When this phenomenon occurs, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged Muslims to perform the sunnah eclipse prayer , or khusuf prayer .
Scholars agree that the eclipse prayer is sunnah , based on evidence from the Quran and the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Allah SWT said:
" Some of His signs (greatness) are the night, the day, the sun and the moon. Do not bow to the sun or the moon, but bow to Allah who created them if you only worship Him ." (QS. Fushshilat [41]: 37)
The Prophet ﷺ also said:
" Indeed, the sun and moon do not experience an eclipse because of someone's death. If you see both of them, then pray and pray more until the eclipse is over ." (HR. Bukhari No. 982)
Reporting from BMKG, the phenomenon of the 2025 total lunar eclipse can be witnessed throughout Indonesia with detailed phases. Here are the times to adjust to the sunnah khusuf prayer, in the area (in WIB, WITA, and WIT):
o Penumbral Eclipse starts: 22.28 WIB / 23.28 WITA / 00.28 WIT
o Partial Eclipse starts: 23.27 WIB / 00.27 WITA / 01.27 WIT
o Total Eclipse starts: 00.30 WIB / 01.30 WITA / 02.30 WIT
o Eclipse Peak: 01.11 WIB / 02.11 WITA / 03.11 WIT
o Total Eclipse ends: 01.52 WIB / 02.52 WITA / 03.52 WIT
Muslims are advised to adjust the time of the eclipse sunnah prayer to the schedule in each region.
Here are 10 steps to perform the sunnah prayer for a lunar eclipse according to the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ:
1. Intend to pray the eclipse prayer in your heart. The intention should be:
“Ushalli sunnatal li khusuufil-qamari rak'ataini imaaman lillahi ta'ala.”
(I intend to pray the two rak'ah sunnah lunar eclipse prayer as the imam for Allah Ta'ala.)
2. Takbiratul ihram while intending to pray the sunnah prayer silently.
3. Read the Al-Fatihah letter , then read the long letter aloud.
4. Long bow with more prayer beads.
5. Rise from bowing, read Al-Fatihah again, then read a shorter letter than before.
6. The second bow has a shorter duration than the first bow.
7. I'tidal, then prostrate twice, sitting between the two prostrations.
8. Do the second rak'ah in the same manner as the first rak'ah. Return with two bows and two readings of Al-Fatihah and Al-Quran verses
9. Final tahiyat and greetings. So, a total of 2 rak'ahs with 4 bows, 4 readings of Al-Fatihah and a letter of the Koran
10. After prayer, two sermons with tausiyah about dhikr, takbir, istighfar, repentance, and alms.
Based on authentic hadith, Rasulullah ﷺ recommended several sunnah practices when an eclipse occurs, namely:
· Increase dhikr to remember the greatness of Allah.
· Perform the sunnah eclipse prayer in congregation.
· Increase almsgiving as a form of social concern.
· Pray a prayer asking for God's protection and forgiveness.
· Increasing istighfar and repentance , getting closer to Him again.
The eclipse phenomenon is one of the signs of Allah's greatness and a warning for His servants to always increase their faith and piety.
An eclipse is not merely an astronomical phenomenon, but also a sign of Allah's greatness in the universe. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized that an eclipse does not occur because of a person's birth or death, but rather as a reminder for humanity to remember the Creator.
" Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah's greatness. If you see an eclipse, then increase your dhikr, prayer, prayer and alms ." (HR. Bukhari No. 1044)
The eclipse is a moment to reflect on Allah's power , increase good deeds, and improve our relationship with Him.
The 2025 Total Lunar Eclipse on September 7–8 is a rare phenomenon observable from Indonesia. Besides being an astronomical event, the lunar eclipse also serves as a spiritual moment to reflect on the greatness of Allah SWT.
"So witness the power of God through the eclipse phenomenon, take a lesson, and make it a moment of increased worship."

Come on, through eclipse prayers and other sunnah practices, we are invited to increase our dhikr, prayer, almsgiving, istighfar and repentance. Hopefully we are among His servants who are able to learn lessons and get closer to Allah.
Wallahu'alam
